Rabbit Ambulatory Infusion System
Ambulatory systems allow animals unrestrained and untethered freedom of movement at all times. New advancements in pump technology, jacket design, catheter material and surgical techniques have made this the system of choice for many researchers. The basic ambulatory infusion system includes: an infusion pump, jacket, extension line and indwelling catheter. The ambulatory pump is placed inside a fitted pocket that is attached to the animal’s jacket. An extension line runs through a hole in the back of the pocket from the pump to the catheter. The connection between the pump and indwelling catheter is determined by your choice of either an externalized catheter or vascular access port. The first (Figure 1) is an exteriorized catheter that luer locks to the extension line. The second (Figure 2) is a vascular access port that uses a Huber Needle and extension line. The vascular access port allows for easy connection and disconnection, without exposing the fluid path, and less chance of infection. Having decided on which style of catheter system to use, the biggest decision becomes choosing the appropriate pump. There are a number of high quality pumps to choose from. Many of them provide a wide range of delivery options. Choose a pump that is capable of delivering the appropriate volumes and rates you require, small enough to be carried, and durable enough to stand up to the rigors of on-animal applications. Keep in mind, the volume of solution to be delivered over the infusion period will often weigh more than the pump itself and must not overburden the animal.Below we have assembled the recommended system for an ambulatory continuous infusion study in a rabbit. We have chosen this system based on our personal experience and the successful experiences of our clients. For more information on selecting the right catheter and pump for your research project, see the General Principles section at the end of this publication. Even easier, you can just give us a call and we will be happy to assist in putting together the system right for you.
