The luer lock valve maintains a closed infusion system when not activated. When activated it affords needleless vascular access to catheter. When a standard syringe (luer or luer lock) is inserted in the valve, the valve activates (opens) and the catheter is available for infusion or sampling. When the syringe is removed the valve re-seals and the catheter is closed. With this valve, vascular access is not exposed to the atmosphere. Aseptic conditions are easily maintained; the valve is covered when not in use and surface of the valve is wiped with a sterile swab prior to use.
